Treatment Modality

Most of my clinical training has been in Systemic / Family Therapy. The foundations of systemic principles are that our thoughts, feelings and beliefs are influenced and formed by our community, heritage, familial relationships, and individual experiences. We are part of a whole, not existing independently, but a branch of a larger body.

A method that is commonly used by Systemic / Family therapists is the genogram. The genogram is similar to a “family tree” in that it records the generational relationships, events, and characteristics of a family. In addition to the genogram, religion/spirituality, ethnicity, environment, and events all assist to create a map of an individual. The use of such maps assists the individual to view his/her familial patterns of interacting, timing, and tendencies.

My additional training in Gestalt, Solution Focused, and Cognitive Therapy compliments the above methods of treatment. Central to the work of Gestalt Therapy is the use of the flow of conscious contact with the environment. The essence of Gestalt is the awareness process. While Gestalt is not as interested in the historical reconstruction of one’s life as Family Therapy, it is interested in how one perceives or reacts to other systems, and it uses the focus of here and now to emphasize and highlight these points of contact.  Similar to Gestalt, Solution Focus and Cognitive Therapy are present-based.
